Majority of Americans Back Trump Impeachment Amid Escalating Iran Conflict

WASHINGTON — Aggressive policies by the United States administration in its conflict with Iran have triggered growing domestic backlash, with a majority of Americans now supporting the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

According to a recent report by Newsweek, a new poll shows that 52 percent of registered voters support impeaching Trump, while 40 percent oppose the move. Notably, support for impeachment has also emerged within Trump’s traditional base, with roughly one in seven Republican voters backing the measure.

The survey, conducted among 790 respondents, was initiated by Free Speech For People in collaboration with pollster Celinda Lake. Its president and founder, John Bonifaz, described the findings as unprecedented.

“This is a result we have never seen this early in a presidential term,” Bonifaz said during a press conference on April 6, 2026.

He added that although this term is considered Trump’s second, the speed of shifting public opinion is striking compared to previous impeachment cases, including that of Richard Nixon.

War Rhetoric and Hormuz Tensions

Rising calls for impeachment appear closely tied to Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict. His decisions have not only reshaped political dynamics in Washington but also eroded public trust.

Tensions peaked on April 7 when Trump issued a stark warning, claiming that “entire civilizations could die overnight” if Iran failed to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Although the vital shipping route was eventually reopened following a two-week ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran, Trump’s approval ratings have taken a hit. His approval dropped to 39 percent in early April, down from 42 percent in late February, while disapproval surged to 53 percent.

The poll also highlights deep political polarization. A vast majority of Democratic voters (84 percent) support impeachment, while 81 percent of Republicans oppose it. Meanwhile, independent voters lean toward impeachment, with 55 percent in favor and 34 percent against.

Impeachment Push in Congress

Public pressure has begun to translate into political action on Capitol Hill. John Larson, a Democratic representative from Connecticut, has formally introduced articles of impeachment against Trump, citing his actions related to Iran.

“Donald Trump has exceeded every constitutional threshold for removal from office,” Larson said in a statement. “His illegal war in Iran has not only raised costs for American families but has also cost American lives.”

Larson also criticized Trump’s rhetoric, warning that it could endanger national security and potentially constitute violations of international law.

Trump, however, dismissed the move during a public rally, mocking Larson and downplaying the impeachment effort.

Despite growing public support, the likelihood of impeachment remains slim. The process requires a majority vote in the House of Representatives and a two-thirds majority in the Senate. Currently, Republicans maintain control of both chambers, holding 218 seats to Democrats’ 214 in the House, along with a dominant position in the Senate.

As geopolitical tensions continue to rise, the political battle in Washington underscores the widening divide between public opinion and legislative reality.
