PARIS – French President Emmanuel Macron has doubled down on his call for European nations to assert their independence, warning that the continent must not become a "vassal" to the United States or get caught up in crises that are not its own.

In a series of bold statements regarding the future of the European Union, Macron emphasized the necessity of "Strategic Autonomy." He argued that for Europe to survive as a global powerhouse, it must establish itself as a "third pole" in the international order, standing alongside the U.S. and China rather than simply following Washington’s lead.

Key Pillars of the Proposed Independence:

  • Geopolitical Sovereignty: Macron warned against Europe being drawn into bloc-to-bloc confrontations, specifically regarding tensions in the Taiwan Strait. He noted that Europe should not be "followers" of the American rhythm or a Chinese overreaction.

  • Defense and Security: The French leader continues to advocate for a unified European defense strategy, urging member states to prioritize European-made military equipment over American imports.

  • Economic Resilience: Macron highlighted the need for the EU to reduce its dependence on the "exterritoriality of the U.S. dollar" and secure its own energy and technological supply chains.

A Divided Response in Europe

While Macron’s vision for a more sovereign Europe resonates with those seeking a stronger, more integrated EU, it has faced pushback from several Eastern European nations. Countries such as Poland and the Baltic states view the United States as the ultimate guarantor of security in the region, particularly in light of ongoing Russian aggression.

Despite the internal debate, Macron remains steadfast. "The paradox would be that, overcome with panic, we believe we are just America’s followers," Macron stated. "The priority is to build our own strategic autonomy."

The President’s remarks come at a critical time as the EU seeks to redefine its role on the world stage amid shifting global alliances and increasing economic competition.
